Well, our first weekend (day) of competitive baseball in the Fall 2014 semester has now come to a close. Unfortunately, we dropped our two 7-inning games to Cal State Fullerton, an opponent we will face multiple times throughout the year. Props to Fullerton, as they were a little less rusty than we were and came out swinging. We also would like to thank Fullerton for always being down to schedule a couple games, even on extremely short notice.
Despite the losses it was good to get out and get some real-game action. We were able to mix in most of the new guys and reevaluate some of the old guys, although it seems not much has changed with the old folk: Sinjin Sato is still stinging the ball, Evan Budrovich is still talking to friends and family as though it were a television broadcast, and Evan Sawyer is still just one brush-back pitch away from charging the mound and starting a brawl. Oh, and Ben Albert is still hanging 0-2 off speed pitches, apparently unaware of the difference between game strategy and batting practice.
Following the game, most of the team was able to make it back for the embarrassment of a performance that was the USC-Arizona State football game. Outfielder Drew Fox, who has previously been quoted at least four times saying, "I am going to try out for the football team" was probably wishing he had, as he could have played far better defense on Arizona State's last-second hail mary than the 5-or-so Trojan defenders that were within defending distance of the play.
Speaking of Arizona, we hope to travel there next week for a couple games in Phoenix, followed by a drive up to Tuscon to watch the football team hopefully split the AZ series with a victory over the U of A. Trip is pending, however, as it is easier said than done to pry a team of players away from the grasp of midterms, without monetary incentive to do so (where are our university-granted scholarships? Haden? Nikias? Please?)
More announcements to come regarding this trip, as well as any other news that is deemed blog-worthy. Till then, fight on!
